October is officially American Pharmacists Month! Started in 2004 by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), American Pharmacists Month celebrates the accomplishments of pharmacists around the country and recognizes pharmacists’ contributions to health care and all they do for their communities.
To acknowledge this special month, we’d like to introduce you to our own resident pharmacist, Dave Hores. Dave has been part of the Innovation team, serving as our Supervising Pharmacist in our Counting Technology Pharmacy, for 17 years.
In his role, Dave:
- Ensures we follow both state and federal pharmacy laws.
- Assists in maintaining our various pharmacy licenses.
- Verifies and maintains our controlled substance inventory.
- Serves as a consultant regarding pharmacy issues with our business.
Our Counting Technology Pharmacy calibrates and tests precise software-counting parameters for all medications in our calibration database. The pharmacy orders medications, maintains a working stock of tablets/capsules to calibrate our dispensers, and provides assistance to our customers concerning issues they may encounter with our counting technologies.
Lastly, they take images of medications we calibrate if our standard drug image database doesn’t have them. We currently have over 12,000 medications calibrated in the database.
48 Years Behind the Bench
Dave graduated from Albany College of Pharmacy in 1971, and has practiced as a licensed pharmacist for 48 years. He began his career at our Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY in 1967 as a “drug clerk,” a position now commonly known as a pharmacy technician. After graduating from Albany, Dave continued at Lourdes as a pharmacist until he retired in 2011. He also worked on a part-time basis in retail pharmacy at Crone Drug Stores in the Southern Tier for 10 years early in his career.
Association with Numerous Pharmacy Organizations
Dave has been a member of various pharmacy organizations throughout his career. During his earlier years, he was a member of the Broome County Pharmaceutical Society, the Pharmaceutical Association of the Southern Tier, the Southern Tier Society of Hospital Pharmacists, and the American Pharmaceutical Association.
He’s More Than Just a Pharmacist
If you happened to attend any of our Innovation holiday parties, or various events throughout New York’s Southern Tier, you may have seen and heard Dave playing his cherished accordion. Dave has been playing and entertaining area folks for 4 decades. Dave is also an avid distance runner and has completed 21 marathons… and he was a late bloomer, starting running at the age of 57.
